The plotters needed to act quickly to seize all the government buildings and arrest the main Nazi officials and then take full charge and desisively stamp their own authority and we know that they didn't do that. If Hitler had died that day we have to remember that steps were in place for the armed forces to continue the war. For example, Major Remer doubted the plotters true intent and went to ask Goebbels for answers. This one Wehrmacht officer alone then turned on the plotters and that alone threw away any chance they had of success. The troops, and to a large extent the population, were loyal to Hitler and his death would have made the plotters deeply unpopular. Unpopular Governments don't tend to last long. If the German army had ended the war at that time then they would have said that it hadn't been beaten in the field - similar to how it saw itself after the end of WW1. The stabbed in the back theory all over again. So I say it would have continued and maybe have been more dragged out with the right commanders running the show.

The war would continue because Reds would want to take the Berlin and destroy the German War Machine. Americans, with help of British Army and little forces of other countries would like do take it too, to don't let Red Army get strategic position for possible attack on the West Europe and even the US. Anyway, Nazi fanatics would still fight and they would want to kill Fuhrer's killers. It is possible that the war would be even worse than is was.

The War would still go on, of course, The Germans would have a new Leader (Rommel, as I'm prettyy sure, would have A high position of Power). However, The Germans involved in "Valkyrie" wanted to get rid of Hitler because of the "Stuff" going on back "Home" (Stuff=Holocaust, Hitler's Reign of Terror, and him failing, Home=Germany). The United States, Britain, and Russia would want to Continue the war as would Germany and Japan. It Would change a lot of the War, but it would not stop it. In another Case, They could've killed Hitler -before- he started the war, which was the original plan. The problem is that it would not stop the war. The war was Inevitable one way or another.

In fact, it would make the War a LOT harder. Hitler was the Entire reason Germany lost in the war, (If you look at it from my view) with the stuff he was doing and his commands to troops, he was digging his own grave. It might of stopped the Holocaust, but the war could've probably lasted Longer had it happened.

I'm surprised that people think the war would end Just like that.

If operation Valkyrie an succes was, i wouldn't just end the war.... The followers of the Fuhrer make the dream of the Fuhrer reallity.... (One big Third Reich)

The thought that the assassination of a key political figure or leader would immediately end a conflict , is just childish.

This is not Lord of the Rings or Star wars where at the death of the main menace the armies dissolve into nothingness and ewoks start dancing in the streets.

Wars have a tenancy to grow beyond those who started them and take on a life of their own. Like a wildfire, once it starts it's not so easy to put out.
